GOVERNOR'S CUP INFORMATION
DATES FOR GOVERNOR'S CUP, 2010-2011 October 6: BSS vs Summit View Sixth Grade Showcase Middle Grades Division Elementary Division Again, we will participate in the Sixth Grade Showcase that is part of Governor's Cup, an academically based competition among schools in the Northern Kentucky area. (Mrs. Krista Esmeier has volunteered to coach Quick Recall.) The Sixth Grade Showcase is designed to provide a competitive opportunity for Kentucky's sixth graders, who are sometimes “lost” between elementary (4-5) and middle grades (6-8) Governor's Cup competitions. The written assessment tests and Quick Recall competitions are on Saturday, December 4. English Composition was added this year and will be Tuesday, November 30. Students may compete in written assessment in math, social studies, science, language arts with a focus on the book, The Cay, and arts and humanities. All written assessment tests are multiple choice. Students write a story based on a prompt for English Composition. The Quick Recall team is another area for participation. Students need a good overall knowledge of EVERYTHING to be on this team! Middle Grades Governor's Cup - Grades 6, 7, & 8 Elementary Grades Governor's Cup - Grades 4 & 5 All grade levels of Governor's Cup include the following areas: QUICK RECALL - You answer academic questions, quickly and accurately. FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVING - We all have problems we'd like to solve. Some people aren't very good at math. Some people have nosy neighbors. Some people go to bed hungry at night. No matter how small or how big the problems are, we'd like to solve them. It's hard to solve a problem, though, unless we understand the problem very well. Who is involved in the problem? What is the problem? When and where does the problem occur? Why does the problem happen? How does it occur? The first step in successful problem solving is defining and describing the problem. That's what a "future scene" is. It is a description of the problem situation you want to solve. You then follow the next five steps of Future Problem Solving to solve your problem situation. FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVING TOPICS, 2011 WRITTEN ASSESSMENT TESTS: ***Eighty percent of the Focus Works questions pertain directly to the work(s), the remaining 20% pertain to: (1) the relationship of the works to the author's other works or other authors of the same time period, (2) the characteristics that match certain literary school, genre, time period, or era. (3) the autobiographical or historical influences on the writing of the piece, and (4) the contributions of the works to later writing styles or genres. In Governor's Cup, each Language Arts open response question will also pertain to the author or the author's time period. genre, or movement.
